Description

Lichens are a complex little community, consisting of a fungus, green alga and/or sometimes a blue-green alga which together live in a symbiotic relationship. The algal partner is able to photosynthesise and contributes carbohydrates to the relationship. In return for the food, the fungal partner offers protection against dehydration and excessive UV rays and also dictates the shape of the lichen.

Lichens are a type of fungus and are classified with fungi.

This very useful brochure has photos of over 90 species – all recorded from the Morwell National Park during field surveys by citizen science groups in the Latrobe Valley Vic.
