Description

These beautiful and intriguing sets of five cards depicting Sarah Lloyd’s beloved slime mound ‘jewels’ would make great gifts.

Acellular or plasmodial slime moulds – also known as Myxomycetes – are mysterious organisms with two mobile stages; amoebae and plasmodia that move through the soil and organic material feeding on bacteria, algae, fungi, possibly lichens and probably each other.

Eventually they stop moving and form exquisitely beautiful spore-bearing ‘fruits’ that rarely exceed 2mm high.

Sarah Lloyd studies myxomycetes in the tall wet eucalypt forest that surrounds her home in northern Tasmania. These five micrographs (of over 100 species in her collection), were taken with a Canon EOS 6D camera mounted on a Leica compound microscope.
